How Early Bollywood Rom-Coms Set the Stage

 Old-School Charm

The 1970s were a golden period for Bollywood, especially when it came to making romantic comedies that blended humour with light-hearted romance. Films like Chupke Chupke (1975) and Golmaal (1979) set the tone for generations of romantic comedies to come, with a mix of intelligent humour, lovable characters and situational comedy that audiences still love today. Here's a look at these iconic films to see how these films laid the foundation for Bollywood's love affair with romantic comedies.

Chupke Chupke (1975)

Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Chupke Chupke is an entertaining tale of mistaken identity, language play and subtle romance. The story revolves around Professor Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra), who along with his wife Sulekha (Sharmila Tagore) plays a big prank on his brother-in-law Raghavendra Sharma (Om Prakash). The humour of the film comes from the misunderstandings that arise when Parimal introduces himself as an ordinary driver to tease Raghavendra.

Gol Maal (1979)

Another classic film by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Golmaal is a masterpiece of comedy and romance starring Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt in the lead roles. The story revolves around a young man named Ramprasad (Amol Palekar) who pretends to have a twin brother with a different personality to please his eccentric boss Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt). Things get extremely complicated when Bhavani's daughter (Bindiya Goswami) falls in love with Ramprasad.
